You can also rent a kayak in Jenner and paddle near the rookery island (not too close though, as it’s illegal to get within a few hundred feet of the shore). Seals will often swim up close to your boat to check you out.

Ferry Info
https://www.reddit.com/r/Tahiti/comments/1dtaqyd/catching_the_ferry_tahiti_moorea_everything_you/

Is there a place near the port to park a car for the day?
There’s a few paid parking lots close to the quay in Tahiti, here are the ones I know of:
At the quay itself
In Centre Vaima (undercover)
Next to the Assembly (near the McDonald’s)
Near Odyssey
Otherwise just search Parking and they’ll come up in Google. Note that unless you’re doing a paid tour, you’ll need transport in Mo’orea, so might be worth taking your car with you.
In Mo’orea, there’s paid parking at the quay.

Can I take luggage on the ferry?
Yes, luggage is included in the cost of your ticket. There will be a person close to where you board who will take your baggage to load onto the boat. If there are multiple ferries docked at the same time, check the baggage car is going onto the same ferry as you with one of the staff. When you disembark, the baggage will be dropped at a designated point for each ferry.

Can I find a taxi at the quay?
Both quays will usually have a line of taxis ready to take passengers.
There are also a number of car rental places close by each quay.

NO NIGHT FERRIES – Don’t miss the last boat

Are there ferries that go to the other islands e.g. Bora Bora?
Yes! There is the Apetahi Express (3 trips per week) and the Vaeara’i (2-3 trips per month).

TAHITI TO DO
  1. Sea Turtle Clinic (Te Mana O Te Moana) – GO HERE Sat 5/2 9:30 am if we can. Need to book it a couple days ahead
    https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/
Great place. You do not have to be a guest of the intercontinental and there is free parking. The signs aren’t very clear, but just ask people where the turtles are. The website is also not very clear, they do lead tours on certain days of the week, but you do not need a tour to see the turtles. It is very easy to see them from the shore and expose kids to them who don’t have the opportunity to scuba dive. When we went there were three turtles in the lagoon. One hawksbill and two green turtles. The green turtles are wearing shirts to protect their shells but they don’t really explain this. You have to ask. You can also visit the dolphin center for more attraction.
Perfect opportunity to see some adult and baby sea turtles, even in the rain! It’s not located where Google Maps says. It’s by the pool of the Intercontinental.
One hour guided tour. Discover our residents and learn more about sea turtles. 1500 XPF ($15). Need reservations 24 hours in advance. (See website for schedule of times)
    Just 10 minutes from Papeete
    https://maps.app.goo.gl/HefWWdQCxn4gzFqz5
  2. PK18 Vaiava Beach – white sand — GO HERE
    AKA Punaauia Beach
A well known spot. It’s one of the few white sand beaches on Tahiti. Lot of coral heads to snorkel in between with rays and turtles. It won’t compare to the number of fish you’ll see in Bora but still interesting. Near the same spot you have lot of similar beaches (Between Puna’auia and Paea) if the pk 18 parking lot is full.
    Jet ski tour
West side of island, 20 minutes from Papeete

  3. Paea Beach
Golden sand beach, which is surrounded by palm trees and caves.
West side of island, 20 minutes from Papeete
    https://maps.app.goo.gl/HJdgVskPvL5czYJE9
  4. Taharuu – Black Sand
South side of island, 45 min from Papeete
    https://maps.app.goo.gl/Jf1DgTw1R9Nhayuq6
  5. Tautira Beach – Maybe don’t go, super far south
Black sand beach with views of the mountains
Super far, South East side of island. 1 hour 30 min from Papeete
    https://maps.app.goo.gl/Cdu2F23jfWmrzxZc9
  6. Water Gardens of Vaipahi
Compact nature area with tropical flowers & vegetation, a small waterfall & mountain trailheads.
South end of island, 1 hour from Papeete – see if this is really worth it
    https://maps.app.goo.gl/FHXt8VLA5rXcT4Y87
  7. Faarumai Waterfalls – GO HERE
“Three waterfalls, short walk from parking lot.
North side of island, 30 min from Papeete
You only have to walk a little further down the trail (from the main fall) to easily find three more! As you walk back toward the parking lot, you might notice a little faint trail on the right side with a sign telling you that it’s closed. You can probably guess, but this is where the two other less popular waterfalls can be found, and the waterfalls are no more than a 10-15 minute walk, depending on your pace.”
    https://maps.app.goo.gl/YXQzTd2UTNu3SPWD6
  8. Venus Point (plage de la pointe Venus) — GO HERE
Beautiful black sand beach with crystal clear water warm, shallow ocean water, great sunset views. Restrooms and showers. Restaurant for lunch. Definitely rent a car if you’re going to go there. Old light house and the dolphin pods regularly jumping at the sunset.
North side of island, 20 min from Papeete
    https://maps.app.goo.gl/zvEJc3uTKggwNpHDA
  9. Papeete Market
Best on Sunday mornings at like 6-7AM
Explore the vibrant municipal market in Papeete for local crafts, produce, and fresh food.
The market downtown Papeete early in the day is the best. Finding parking is a challenge, make sure to carry coins for parking.
We went early, but it turns out we went too early because the shops don’t really open until 9 and we were there at about 7:30am. Prices were reasonable. Lots of food choices. Lots of fried food options like egg rolls and doughnuts.

BORA BORA TO DO

Scooter Around The Island (3-4 hours) 20 mile total, Scooters go around 35mph
Driving a scooter at 35mph around island, with no stops, is about 45 min
You can easily stop anywhere with scooter to snorkel.
Make sure you fill the tank in morning on Sunday. The gas station is open only for a few hours. Cross a street from gas station is a food store with fresh baguettes delivered a few times a day.

station de nettoyage des Mantas (Manta cleaning stations)
“Best to arrive early here before most of the tourist boats. We arrived at 08:30 and saw 2 beautiful mantas soaring and circling beneath us.
We had swimming goggles and beach shoes which were useful to navigate the coral near to the beach.
2 dive boats had dropped off their divers who we saw at the very bottom watching the mantas.
We rented some shopping bikes and locked them up on the beach on the east side.
As per the other posts advice, we left nothing next to the bikes for fear something might disappear.
All in all a fab spot and well worth a visit early in the morning.
Those already there can give you useful advice and where to see the mantas.
Don’t hesitate and go!”
Decent way of seeing the manta, via guided snorkeling. Visibility is just so-so, which is expected (in lagoon, more suspended sediments). We did scuba in Fakarava South and the cleaning station is on the reef between the ocean and the lagoon, much better visibility (if that’s what you want to do)

Anau: A popular lagoon spot known for manta rays, but also a great place to spot sea turtles while snorkeling or diving.

MANTA RAY INFO
“Bora Bora has several manta ray cleaning stations, primarily Anau in the lagoon on the east side, famous for close encounters at depths suitable for snorkeling and diving where cleaner wrasse tend to mantas, and Toopua Nui on the west side, a shallower spot great for snorkelers to see rays being cleaned by smaller fish. Another shore-accessible option is Pointe Ta’ihi, offering early morning snorkeling opportunities to see mantas cleaning near the drop-off.

Key Manta Ray Cleaning Stations
Anau (East Side Lagoon): A well-known site with coral gardens where mantas gather for cleaning by small fish; accessible for both snorkelers and divers, offering deep to shallow areas.

Toopua Nui (West Side Lagoon): A shallower, larger cleaning station (max 8m) behind Motu Toopua, offering excellent snorkeling with mantas directly below.

Pointe Ta’ihi (Main Island Shore): A rare spot where you can snorkel directly from the main island’s shore to see mantas cleaning on the drop-off in the mornings.

What to Expect at a Cleaning Station
Manta rays visit these reefs to have parasites removed by cleaner fish (wrasse).
Snorkeling & Diving: Many sites are suitable for both, but always respect the mantas by not touching them or making sudden movements.
Visibility: Can vary by day, but often offers good chances for underwater photography.
How to Visit
Guided Tours: Essential for finding mantas, as they move around; local operators know the best spots and times.
Respect the Wildlife: Do not chase, touch, or block the mantas; stay at a distance to allow them to feed and be cleaned undisturbed.”
